19 - 1/13/13 - Allomyrina dichotoma- “Kabutomushi” - Watercolor & Ink

My first attempt at seriously doing watercolor in this particular sketchbook…It’s been rather frustrating because I typically use 300lb hot press paper when I do my watercolor pieces. This didn’t turn out too terribly but the paper did pull up and get pulpy because of the water, though this is a watercolor sketchbook. Frustrating, but I’m just going to have to change my technique a bit. I might transfer some of these onto my usual paper because I am more comfortable with it, and it’s smooth so doesn’t pull up with my strokes. But I rather like the pencil & watercolor style, and I think tracing it would just not be the same, so for now, here’s this attempt. I may even try this piece again transferred, but I need a break.

Heracross beetle! : )

That moment when you realize that your favorite show really isn’t very creative, I mean seriously, Heracross is the actual name of a beetle, fml lol

I should clarify - this is the beetle Heracross was based on~ Its name is actually the Japanese Rhinoceros beetle. I think the Pokemon designers are actually very creative (most of the time, anyway)!

(I accidentally reblogged this on BOTH my other accounts before I got it right and reblogged it here, haha, I’m such a derp sometimes.)

13 - 1/7/13 - Papilio Beatus - “Blessed Butterfly”

The very convenient butterfly from the Zeldaverse. I haven’t ever seen a ‘scientific’ name for this, and I doubt one was included in the game, so here’s mine. It’s a pretty obvious choice, haha. I thought if there was a family it’d belong in, it’d be papilionidae.
